Bottom Line

What we loved

  • Good location in Midtown Manhattan, close to everything & anything.

  • Raymond at the front desk was very jovial & provided a wonderful check-in experience.

  • TV has chromecast functionality that worked well.

  • The window could be opened to allow in all the sights & smells of Midtown New York.

  • Comfortable King-size bed.

  • Staff at the rooftop bar were personable. Happy hour food and drinks were good. [January 2025 update] The rooftop bar was closed for the winter season, drinks & $10 bar bites were available in 1st-floor dining area. The coconut shrimp, truffle fries & chicken wings were good & reasonably priced.

  • $233 average per night rate is cheaper than NYC's $300 rate. For the price & location it is a steal. [January 2025 update] Paid ~$145 per night during our 4-night stay which is a great price point for this hotel

What we did not like

  • Keycard is not needed for the elevator which is a safety concern.

  • The hotel only has 2 elevators, which results in long wait times in the mornings. [January 2025] One elevator was out of service during our stay. There was a note in the lobby which called it an "elevator project". Expect longer wait times during 8 - 10 am and 3 - 5 pm.

  • Room is small at 195 square feet; hard to navigate with 2 adults and luggage.

  • We were "upgraded" to a city view room however, our room looked into the buildings across the street.

  • During the mornings the housekeeping door nearby creaks very loudly when accessed which happened very frequently.

  • Breakfast service while good intention was slow & the server forgot several items. One party's food came out almost 5 minutes after the first plate was dropped off. After eating here the first day (Globalist benefit) we skipped it as there are ample food places within walking distance.

  • Very thin walls. I could hear when our next door neighbors sneezed.

  • $25 daily destination fee with minimal inclusions (waived for Globalist). https://www.hyatt.com/en-US/hotel/new-york/hyatt-herald-square-new-york/nychh/policies

Verdict

In town for a NY Liberty game we needed a central base. The Hyatt Herald was the cheapest option of the 4 star ratings, and helped me achieve another stay towards Brand Explorer. Not expecting much, we were surprised by the friendly front desk & rooftop bar staff along with the albeit small, functional & comfortable room. As we plan our return to NY for a Knicks game I am already planning our return stay here.
